After upsetting Buenos Aires champion Marco Cecchinato at the opening round and making his way to the semifinals of the of this edition of the Rio Open presented by Claro, Slovenian Aljaz Bedene withdrew from the event this Saturday after injuring his right leg during the quarter-final match against Bolivian Hugo Dellien, on Friday.

“I was looking forward to the match today against Laslo [Djere] and after having a few good weeks during this swing and enjoying playing in Rio, I feel sad that I had to withdraw from the semifinal today. I had started feeling a pain in my right leg and during one sprint it got worse yesterday”, said Bedene, who also thanked the fans for the support he had all week in Rio.

“I want to say sorry to all my fans and thank you for supporting me this week. I hope to be back in the future to play again here in Rio”, said Bedene.

With that, Djere is automatically in his first ever ATP Tour final.

The Serbian made a great week at the Rio Open so far, getting his first-ever Top 10 win over number one seed Dominic Thiem in the first round and progressed all the way to his fourth career ATP Tour semi-final.
