One of the rising starts of the ATP Tour, Arthur Fils sees a bright future for João Fonseca, 17, who stunned him in straight sets at their opening at the Rio Open presented by Claro.
Fils, 19, who played a younger opponent for the first time on the Tour, lost by 6/0 and 6/4 in one hour and a half of match at Quadra Guga Kuerten.
"I don't know what happened at the match. He played really well, hitting the ball really hard so it was tough to control the ball. Maybe I started a little bit too slow but I knew it was going to be a tough match for sure. He’s a great player and I tried to do better but he was playing too good. Congratulations to him on doing a great job today”, said Fils, the youngest Frenchman to win an ATP Tour title since Gael Monfils in _he won the tittle in Lyon, last year.
“João did everything good today, he didn’t have any weaknesses. I tried to go on his forehand, on his backhand, he was answering every question I was asking. He’s a great player has a great future in front of him.”
For the first time in Rio, Fils used his time off to visit some of the city’s main tourist attractions, and said that the atmosphere at Quadra Guga Kuerten, full of Fonseca’s supporters was not a problem for him.
"It was very nice to play at this atmosphere, I don’t think it had anything to do with that. Us tennis players we play for these kind of matches. It just didn’t go my side today."
