After four matches were rescheduled due to the intense rain at the Rio Open presented by Claro, Thursday will be a busy day at the courts of Jockey Club Brasileiro.
Briton Camerion Norrie will continue his quest to defend his title at the tournament against Chilean Tomas Barrios Vera at Quadra Guga Kuerten, not before 4:30 pm in a match rescheduled from Wednesday. It will be their first encounter.
Also playing this Thursday are four local players who will try to reach the quarterfinals and give Brazil it’s best performance in the tournament history. The last time Brazil had a representative at this stage of the Rio Open was seven years ago, when Thiago Monteiro reached the quarterfinals.
First in action will be the country’s number one player, Thiago Seyboth Wild, who will resume his match against Jaume Munar. Wild was leading by 6/2 and 2/3 when the match was suspended.
Later on Quadra Guga Kuerten, two locals will face each other: Monteiro takes on qualifier Felipe Meligeni Alves.
And closing the action at the main court will be João Fonseca, 17, who stunned rising star Arthur Fils this Wednesday.
Fonseca, last year’s US Open boys’ champion takes on 2020 Rio Open champion Christian Garin.
“The match against Garin will be another tough one, but I think I’m prepared,” said the youngest who was burned and raised in Rio. “I’m at home and have my family and friends here to support me so hopefully I’ll try to enjoy the moment and let’s see what happens.”
