his Tuesday, the Rio Open announced a top-10 player as the first confirmed participant for the 13th edition of the ATP 500. Italian Flavio Cobolli, currently ranked World No. 7 and runner-up at Roland Garros, will make his debut at South America's largest tennis tournament, taking place from February 13 to 21 at the Jockey Club Brasileiro. Ticket presales begin on October 6, with general sales opening on October 13.
In the best phase of his career, Cobolli comes off a consistent season featuring top-tier results across all surfaces. It was on clay, however, that the Italian stood out, reaching his first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros, where he finished as runner-up. Cobolli's other major campaigns in 2026 include winning the ATP 500 title in Acapulco, reaching the final at the ATP 500 in Munich, making the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, and advancing to the semifinals at the Cincinnati Masters 1000.
“I am very excited to play in the Rio Open. I’ve heard so much about the tournament and the Brazilian fans. It will be special to make my debut in a new, larger stadium. I can’t wait to meet everyone in February,” said the Italian.
This will be Cobolli's first time competing in a tournament in Brazil. In addition to his Acapulco title, the charismatic Italian also won the ATP 500 in Hamburg and the ATP 250 in Bucharest last season, bringing his total to three ATP-level trophies. Flavio is also a Davis Cup champion—the World Cup of tennis—with Italy, having led the team to victory in 2025.
Known for his good relationship with Brazilian tennis players like João Fonseca and Marcelo Melo, the Italian is happy to finally meet Brazilian fans. "I am very excited to play the Rio Open for the first time. I have seen so many pictures and heard so much about the tournament and the Brazilian crowd. It’s going to be special," he said.
Cobolli is the first major star confirmed for the 13th edition of the Rio Open, which promises to be historic. Last month, the Rio ATP 500 announced an expansion of its venue at the Jockey Club Brasileiro. The new space increases court capacity as well as the covered, entertainment, and dining areas, offering more comfort and an even more complete experience for fans. With this, the Rio Open enters a new phase to match the growth of the sport and high ticket demand.
“For this new cycle of the Rio Open, we wanted to bring something big, and we are thrilled with Flavio's confirmation. He is coming off the best season of his career, with impressive results at major tournaments that put him close to a spot in the ATP Finals. Beyond being a great player, Flavio is a very charismatic figure who I’m sure the crowd will connect with,” said Luiz Carvalho, Tournament Director.
More additions to the 2026 lineup will be announced soon on the official Rio Open channels.
