The 12th edition of the Rio Open has added two more major international names to its lineup. Fan favorites among the Brazilian crowd, Gaël Monfils and Matteo Berrettini have been confirmed for the biggest tennis tournament in South America, joining João Fonseca, Brazil’s No. 1, and Lorenzo Musetti, a bronze medalist at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The 2026 Rio Open will take place from February 14 to 22 at the Jockey Club Brasileiro.
A guaranteed source of entertainment on court, Monfils recently announced that he will retire at the end of the 2026 season, with the Rio Open included in his farewell schedule on the tour. This will be the second appearance of the charismatic 39-year-old Frenchman at the ATP 500 event in Rio, which he also played in 2018, when he reached the quarterfinals.
A former world No. 6, Monfils owns 13 career titles and has reached the semifinals at Roland Garros (2008) and the US Open (2016), with victories over players such as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, establishing himself as one of the leading figures of his generation. Holder of several longevity-related records, he is the oldest champion in ATP Tour history (since its creation in 1990) and the oldest since Ken Rosewall in 1977, following his title win in Auckland earlier this year. He is also the French player with the most match wins at Roland Garros, tied with legend Yannick Noah at 40 victories.
“I can’t wait to return to the Rio Open. I was there only once, and the atmosphere was incredible. This will be my final season, so my expectation is to enjoy it, try to play great tennis, and have an amazing connection with the fans in Rio. I remember the atmosphere on the court, and it was simply sensational,” said the Frenchman.
Berrettini made history for tennis in his country by becoming the first Italian to reach the Wimbledon final in 2021. He was also the first player born in the 1990s to reach the quarterfinals or better at all four Grand Slam tournaments, highlighting his consistency across all surfaces. Matteo has won 10 singles titles, six of them on clay.
“I am very happy to return to Rio after a few years. I really have high expectations for this tournament. As you know, I have a Brazilian grandmother, so I truly want to play my best tennis there, and the last time I played, the support was unbelievable,” said Berrettini.
This will be the former world No. 6’s second appearance at the Rio Open. In 2022, the Italian—who has a Brazilian grandmother – played in Brazil for the first time as a professional and reached the quarterfinals of the tournament, competing in front of his family.
