The yellow ball came into play this Saturday at the Jockey Club Brasileiro for the first ten matches of the opening round of the Rio Open Qualifying, presented by Claro. There were eight matches in the singles draw and two in the doubles draw.
The winners will return to the court this Sunday, starting at 4 pm (local time), to define the last four spots for the singles main draw and the last spot in the doubles draw, which begin next Monday.
The public attended in good number to support mainly the five Brazilian players. A highlight was Thiago Monteiro's 2-0 victory (6/4, 6/1) over the number 1 seed in the Qualifying, Paraguayan Adolfo Daniel Vallejo, on the Guga Kuerten Court.
“It was an almost perfect debut, I’m very happy. I think there’s a different energy here that helps me overcome adversity and bring out my best tennis. Now, it’s time to face the next battle this Sunday,” said Monteiro, who will play against Serbian Dusan Lajovic, the number 6 seed in the Qualifying rounds.
