The main draw singles matches for the Rio Open, presented by Claro, were drawn this Saturday, and the first round features duels between Italian and Argentinian players.
The number 1 seed in the ATP 500, Francisco Cerundolo, will face his compatriot Mariano Navone. The number 2 seed, Italian Luciano Darderi, will face Argentinian Juan Manuel Cerundolo, Francisco's younger brother. Matteo Berrettini will face another Italian, Lorenzo Sonego.
Brazilian João Fonseca, the number 3 seed in the tournament, will wait until Sunday night to find out his opponent, who will come from the qualifying rounds.
Current two-time champion Sebastian Baez, the number 4 seed, will face Spaniard Carlos Taberner, who is playing in the main draw of the Rio Open for the first time.
Another Brazilian in the competition, João Lucas Reis was invited by the ATP and the Rio Open organization to draw the matches. He will face German Yannick Hanfmann.
“I liked the draw and I’m motivated. He’s an opponent I already know, I even trained with him here at the Rio Open last year,” said João Reis.
