The Rio Open Qualifying rounds concluded on Sunday night, with the final six players qualifyed for the main singles draw of the ATP 500. Dino Prizmic, Vilius Gaubas, Thiago Monteiro and Igor Marcondes won their matches. Dusan Lajovic and Tomas Barrios Vera entered as lucky losers, replacing Laslo Djere and Lorenzo Sonego, who were injured.
In a three-set battle (2/6, 6/3 and 6/3) in almost three hours, Brazilian Thiago Monteiro, 31, defeated Serbian Dusan Lajovic, 35, and secured his 10th participation in the main draw of the biggest tournament in South America.
“It was a very tough match and I’m very happy, because getting into the main draw of the Rio Open is something very special, playing at home, with the support of the crowd, which filled the court again,” said Monteiro.
Even though he lost, Lajovic will enter as a lucky loser. He is the only player to have participated in all 12 editions of the Rio Open.
Another Brazilian, Igor Marcondes, who received a wild card to participate in the Qualifying rounds, will debut in the main draw after beating two quarter-finalists from the 2025 edition. On Saturday, he defeated Chun-Hsin Tseng of Chinese Taipei, and on Sunday the Portuguese Jaime Faria (6/1, 7/6(5)).
Vilius Gaubas, 21, the number 7 seed in the Qualifying rounds, became the first Lithuanian to qualify for the main draw of the Rio Open. He defeated the Italian Francesco Passaro (6/4, 6/4).
The Croatian Dino Prizmic, 20, defeated the Chilean Tomas Barrios Vera (6/3, 6/4) and will debut in the main draw of the Rio Open. Barrios Vera also enters as a lucky loser.
