Brazilians João Fonseca and Marcelo Melo had a good start at the Rio Open on the opening day of the Guga Kuerten Court program this Monday, with a victory over Argentine Roman Burruchaga and Italian Andrea Pellegrino by 2 sets to 0 (6/4, 6/4), in 1 hour and 17 minutes.

The Brazilians will face in the second round the winners of the match between Argentinians Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni, the tournament's number 2 seeds, and Ecuadorian Gonzalo Escobar and the experienced Dutchman Jean-Julien Rojer, owner of three Grand Slam titles

"Rio is a very special place for both of us, I think we managed to bring together all this positive energy from the fans," said Melo, former number 1 in the doubles ranking.

"It is an honor to have this opportunity to play with Marcelo. Besides getting more rhythm, being there in the atmosphere of the center court and feeling the vibe. We played a great match today," added Fonseca.

On the other hand, the other three Brazilians who entered the court for the singles draw lost. Gustavo Heide was defeated by Czech Vit Kopriva (6/2, 7/6(5)), Igor Marcondes lost to Peruvian Ignacio Buse (4/6, 7/5, 6/4) and João Lucas Reis lost to German Yannick Hanfmann (7/6(3), 6/4).
