Argentina is the country with the most representatives in the main singles draw of the Rio Open, presented by Claro. Nine players started the tournament and eight of them played this Tuesday.
Number 1 seed in the ATP 500 and champion in Buenos Aires last Sunday, Francisco Cerundolo overcame fatigue and defeated his compatriot Mariano Navone (6/1, 3/6, 6/4).
“Honestly, I arrived tired in Rio on Monday and I tried to rest as much as possible. I didn't play so well, but the confidence and adrenaline I brought from the Buenos Aires title helped me win tough games against a very difficult player,” said Cerundolo.
His younger brother, Juan Manuel Cerundolo, beat the number 2 seed, the Italian Luciano Darderi (6/1, 3/6, 6/4).
“I played a very solid game, especially in the first set, tactically impeccable, without letting him get comfortable on the court, and I won for the first time in an ATP 500, and that means a lot,” celebrated Cerundolo, who will face German Yannick Hanfmann.
In another duel between Argentinians, Román Andrés Burruchaga defeated Camilo Ugo Carabelli (6/3, 6/4) and had much to celebrate.
“It was a tense and important match, but I felt good on the court and I won for the first time in Rio and in an ATP 500. I knocked on the door a few times to enter the top 100 and now I've made it,” said Burruchaga, who will play against Czech Vit Kopriva.
In the third match between Argentinians, Tomas Martin Etcheverry defeated Francisco Comesana (3/6, 6/3 and 6/4).
"It was a very difficult match, I was beaten in the first set, but I served very well, which gave me the peace of mind to win," analyzed Etcheverry, who will face Lithuanian Vilius Gaubas.
The big defeat for the Argentine squad this Tuesday was that of Sebastián Báez, two-time Rio Open champion, who was eliminated in his opening match by Portuguese Jaime Faria.
"It was a very bad night for me, I didn't feel good on the court at any time and I didn't play the tennis I expected, after a good start to the year," he explained.
