After winning the first match of the main doubles draw on Monday, Marcelo Melo wrote the word "osmosis" on the camera lens. The chemical term serves to explain the synchronicity with his partner João Fonseca. The Brazilians are playing an ATP tournament together for the first time and are thrilling the crowd at the Rio Open, presented by Claro.
This Wednesday, they defeated the No 2 seed Argentinians Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni (6/4, 6/0) to go to semifinal.
"It was a beautiful match. After a very good first round, we managed to have an even better quarterfinal. I hope that by the end of the week we can win the trophy," said Fonseca.
“I think the chemistry we have comes a lot from outside the court as well. When you have a good relationship off the court, you can transmit that onto the court. Our game flows, the osmosis flows, the crowd flows. So, I think we are in a good way,” analyzed Marcelo Melo.
And how far can this duo of Marcelo Melo, 41 years old, and João Fonseca, 19, go?
"We call Marcelo Pinot Noir. Like wine. Older and much better. We'll see, but I think in the future we'll have more Fonseca/Melo," believes Fonseca.
Melo also believes so, but...
"No. It's Melo/Fonseca," he jokes.
