Ignacio Buse, just 21 years old, made history at the Rio Open, his first ATP 500 tournament. He defeated João Fonseca (5/7, 6/3, 6/4) in his hometown to become the first Peruvian to reach the quarterfinals of an ATP 500.
To celebrate, he praised his country by writing in Spanish a phrase that recently went viral on social media: “Peru és clave”, which means that Peru is important or essencial.
“I am very happy with today's victory, because it was a very complicated match, with a very complicated crowd. We know everything that it means to play against João in Brazil. The tournament is very good, it's special to play here, with all this crowd, which doesn't happen often,” said Buse.
Peruvian player João Buse, ranked 91st in the world ranking, who saved eight of nine break points in the match, has known Fonseca for a long time and made a point of being kind to his defeated opponent.
“I wish him all the best because we are great friends. João has an incredible present and future,” said Buse, who will face Italian Matteo Berrettini this Friday.
Dejected after the defeat, Fonseca analyzed the match. “I played a good first set, I got a break. But in the second set, I missed a great opportunity, which I can't miss at this level. I'm sad about the defeat, but tomorrow I'll wake up with the same energy for the doubles match with Marcelo.”
Fonseca and Melo face the Germans Schnaitter and Wallner this Friday.
