The Brazilian double João Fonseca and Felipe Melo defeated the German Constantin Frantzen and the Belgian Robin Haase in the final of the main draw of the doubles at the Rio Open 2026, presented by Claro (4/6, 6/3, 10/8). The match on the full Guga Kuerten court lasted 1 hour and 34 minutes.
It was the first home trophy for 19-year-old João Fonseca and the second consecutive title for 41-year-old Marcelo Melo, the tennis player who has reached the final of the biggest tennis tournament in South America the most times.
Before the awards ceremony, the former world number 1 in the doubles ranking gave all the credit for the victory to Fonseca.
“This guy here is special! A lot of people criticize him unfairly. This guy is amazing, you can see what he did now, total credit to him, today I just watched. Throughout the tournament, other matches too. 8/8 in the match tiebreak and the guy hits me a winner, then an ace, showing how much of a champion's mentality he has. Victory for him!”, said Melo.
Fonseca also got emotional during the awards ceremony and also showed confidence that he will win the singles title in the tournament with which he has a long relationship.
“I wanted to thank Marcia and Lui (directors of the Rio Open), who since 2023 have given me the opportunity to play here, a very special tournament for me, where I have a very cool history. I'm still going to win this singles tournament, I believe, but in the meantime we won the doubles and that's great,” said Fonseca.
The Dutchman Haase acknowledged João Fonseca and also thanked the public for their presence at the doubles final.
"If you keep going like this, you'll definitely win in singles too. I've been on the circuit for 20 years and I've always dreamed of playing in front of a crowd like this in my country, so thank you very much," Haase concluded.
