Lucky losers Camilo Ugo Carabelli and Jaime Faria qualified for their first ATP Tour level quarterfinals this Thursday at the Rio Open presented by Claro. Their match will be the first one on Court 1, starting at 5pm, local time.
Carabelli, 25, defeated Damir Dzumhur (BIH) in two sets: 6/4 and 6/4 in one hour and 46 minutes.
“I was really tired today, I don’t know what happened. I took a nap at the player’s lounge before the match and maybe I slept a bit too much”, said the Argentinian. “To be honest I’m really surprised to be in the quarterfinals, I never played well here in Rio, never won a match here before and never really felt comfortable here.”
Faria, 21, overcame Spaniard Jaume Munar at Court Guga Kuerten to advance at the ATP 500 by 4/6, 6/2 and 6/3 in a two-hour match. With the biggest win of his career and he will now break into the Top 100 next Monday.
“I never played him but I know he’s been doing a great start of the season. I know he won the Challenger in Rosario. I’m sure it’s going to be a tough match because there’s a lot at stake”, said the Portuguese, who will be the youngest Portuguese man to break into Top 100 since Nuno Marques spent one week at number 100 in 1991 at age 20.
