Another big name joins the tenth edition of the Rio Open. Current champion of the biggest tennis tournament in South America, the British Cameron Norrie returns to Rio de Janeiro to defend his title in an edition that already has Carlos Alcaraz, Stanislas Wawrinka and Arthur Fils also confirmed. The Rio Open takes place at the Jockey Club Brasileiro between the 17th and 25th of February.

The Brit's campaign in the 2023 edition of the Rio Open surprised everyone. Coming off the final in Buenos Aires, in which he was beaten by Alcaraz, Norrie continued his excellent performance in Rio de Janeiro, where he defeated the likes of Thiago Monteiro and Juan Manuel Cerundolo in his campaign to the final. There, the opponent was Carlos Alcaraz once again, with Norrie emerging champion.

“I am very happy to return to Rio de Janeiro. It was one of my most special weeks of the year, not only because of the title, but because of what I experienced in the city, the connection with the public and my visit to Rocinha and the social tennis project. It was very impactful,” Norrie said.

Owner of five ATP titles, Norrie is currently number 18 in the world and has already reached 8th place in 2022, the year in which he won the Delray Beach and Lyon trophies, and was a semi-finalist at Wimbledon. In 2023, in addition to the title in Rio de Janeiro and the final in Buenos Aires, the Brit was also a finalist in Auckland. In total, this is the third edition of the Rio Open that Norrie has competed in.

“We maintained the tradition of bringing the defending champion for the 10th time. It will be special to have Norrie, alongside Alcaraz, fighting to see who could be the first two-time Rio Open champion. Norrie has proven himself to be a competitive player on all surfaces and will only add to our line up with the best on clay,” said Luiz Carvalho, Tournament Director of the Rio Open.

For Marcia Casz, General Director of the Rio Open, Norrie's presence fills the tournament with pride. “One of the biggest challenges in promoting a major tennis tournament is creating tradition. This is a fundamental element in attracting great players. Upon reaching its tenth edition, we can say that the Rio Open, creating a tradition, has become a reference event in the country. The greatest evidence of this is the cast of great players with which we will treat our audience in the 2024 edition. Norrie’s presence is yet another that fills us with pride.”

In addition to Norrie, Alcaraz, Wawrinka and Fils, two Brazilians are also guaranteed in the tenth edition. Gustavo Heide, the winner of the Maria Esther Bueno Cup, won an invitation to the main draw of the ATP 500, while Gilbert Klier, runner-up, will compete in the qualifying.

The Rio Open reaches its tenth edition, from February 17th to 25th, 2024, at the Jockey Club Brasileiro (RJ), featuring in its gallery of champions names such as Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer, Pablo Cuevas, Dominic Thiem, Diego Schwartzman, Laslo Djere, Cristian Garin, Cameron Norrie and Carlos Alcaraz. And that's not all! Among tennis players who have already been in the top 10 of the ATP rankings, the Rio Open also saw Kei Nishikori, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, John Isner, Marin Cilic, Gael Monfis and Fabio Fognini in action.
